Youth in action

Redifining Technology; Creating Endless Opportunities

ABOUT ICT4D KENYA

Being a Youth in Africa can be fun. It is a common believe though because unemployment for the Youth is and is becoming a thorny issue. Statistically Youth in Africa account for over 65% of the continents young population. Ideally more than 70% of these live in rural Africa where access to basic needs is a big impediment to their growth.

Most of these Youth have great visions, dreams and plans. However they can hardly fulfill them due to lack of basic skills.

Technology is one of the main strategic enablers of development if well utilized and can offer a great opportunity for these youth. However most of the IT training is only based in urban areas and little or no coverage in the rural areas.

5 years ago ICT for Development Kenya -ICT4D Kenya was founded to bridge this gap by providing IT training to rural youth with three core objectives that form our pillars.

  • Equipping Youth with the IT skill; making them employable
  • Inspiring and mentoring Youth to start own businesses in IT in the rural areas and
  • Inspiring Youth to study IT and science related subject in colleges and universities

We achieve this by moving from village to village, setting up computer labs in the remotest of the villages in rural Africa (currently Kenya) and within a month offer schedule-tight classes that give every member in the village an opportunity to study flexibly.

In those 5 years we pride in being in the right path towards contributing towards the global development goal of  “Impacting over  One Million lives by year 2020”.

Our Story

Every year a group of young Kenyans are graduating from high school in readiness for a future, a future marred with uncertainties, individualism and a space where the rich have it all. In 3 months after school the dreaded results are out and realities start to dawn. A young girl, boy growing in a rural village in Kenya has put the minds of the parents anxious that the best is to happen only to realise that its not as was expected and its time to face the “challenges” of life. Technology is the in thing in this modern world and need to get training in that. But lol! It only can happen in towns and cities where nature has centred it. Cost of living in town versus giving chance to siblings down plays the urge to learn technology unlike the other kids living in town.

Cost of living in town versus giving chance to siblings down plays the urge to learn technology unlike the other kids living in town. ICT4D Kenya within a flexible mobile model reaches out to underserved communities providing the highly sought skill. This doesn’t only interest this young girl and boy but all community men and women who identify with the power of technology themselves.

It is fun seating and listening to a demistyfied mode of ICT training that we provide tailored and befitting the village lady who wants to learn how the computer can help her manage her basic calculations in her local women group. Stories get told of young people ending up in setting up their social IT ventures in their village and the story holds water in the development and socio economic circles as ICT4D Kenya derives impact and revenue from the same and ululations of we did it has always become our song.
