Who We Are
“A journey of a thousand miles starts with a step”
Back in 2009 a selfless Computer Scientist working in an international arena as well as teaching at the university felt that it was time to say no to big stories of bridging the digital divide.
Equipped with one basic computer and a digital camera he set out on a journey, a journey marred with challenges and uncertainties. A journey that had no destination but a journey full of anticipation. Day after day his zeal to change his community got real when he finally set to settle on sharing what he had learnt to the rural youth in a remote rural village in Kenya.
Deviating from the norm where IT education was only centered in urban areas, he chose to stick with the rural Youth who had shown lots of interest to acquire the skill.
Having realized that Youth that lived in the villages had the tenacity to learn, he setup his first ever computer lab of 4 Pcs and called in the youth to learn. The numbers were overwhelming from day zero necessitating to think of a plan to accommodate the surging numbers.
That was the birth of ICT for Development Kenya’s model of offering flexible IT learning to rural populations. Developing our model was not defined by any standards neither any thoughts of being a social enterprise.
As we moved from village to village training an average 150 youth per village our refined model kept on getting recognition only to realize that we were changing peoples lives.
This story is now different as now ICT4D Kenya prides in being a member of networks for organizations, entrepreneurs and social enterprises that are matching towards achieving the global goal of “Impacting to over 1 Billion people by year 2020”.
We are in this arena to stay as we now boast of having trained well over 40,000 young people in 5 years out of which 81% have confirmed having got employment, 4% started their own businesses utilizing IT and 2% now studying IT in colleges and Universities out of our inspiration.
Our call for action is “Come and join us in this journey”
“ICT for Development Kenya
Training rural Youth on technology for Job creation”
To achieve our goal –we camp in a village for 2 months during which we mobilize the community and provide 2 hour classes between 8am -8pm i.e 8-10am,10-12pm-12-2pm-2-4pm-4-6pm and 6-8pm. After the 2 months training we certify our students and move to a new project site.
